5 Fad Diets You Should Avoid At All Costs

Maybe you’ve heard about a new diet and you are looking to shed a few pounds. Many fad diets do not work or are just plain unhealthy. These are five of the most bogus and most dangerous diets that are popular today.

Paleo Diet

This diet is based on the way our ancestors ate over 10,000 years ago. The diet consists of eating mostly vegetables, fruit, nuts, and seeds. Dairy, legumes, and processed foods are not allowed. Unfortunately, our biology has changed since the caveman existed. Stomach and intestinal bacteria have changed allowing us to digest dairy and plenty of other foods. The only benefit to this diet is that it allows the dieter to eat whole foods rather than processed foods. However a healthy, balanced diet is full of whole foods too.

Dukan Diet

On the Dukan Diet you are allowed to eat lean protein and plenty of vegetables, but that’s about it. There are no carbohydrates except for the few that are found in the veggies. In addition to limited food choices, daily caloric intake is restricted as well. The Dukan Diet claims that you can loose weight quickly. However, there are several problems that arise from this diet. Carbohydrates are part of a well-balanced diet. Virtually eliminating carbs will make you feel tired, sluggish, and moody. While a calorie deficit is crucial to losing weight, the drastic calorie reduction in this diet is not healthy and should not be sustained for long periods of time, but limited food choices can make this diet hard to stick to anyway.

Alkaline Diet

Pills and drinks have been created by companies around the world that claim that by ingesting their product, the alkalinity levels in the body will decrease, allowing you to lose weight. They say that the foods we eat today raise the alkalinity in our body causing weight gain and disease. These companies also sell urine tests to monitor your progress. When ingesting food or anything else too acidic, our bodies will find balance by filtering the excess acid through our kidneys, and allow us to eliminate it through urination. Therefore, a urine test will make it look like the diet is working when really it is just the body doing its job.

HCG Diet

HCG is a hormone naturally produced in post partum women which allows them to quickly drop weight after pregnancy. The HCG diet was developed around this biological event. HCG injections along with a 500 calorie per day diet are the foundation of this dangerous diet. HCG hormone injections can cause a number of health issues including ovarian cysts, blood clots, and increased fertility. Plus, the fact that exercise is restricted while on the HCG diet because of the low caloric intake proves that it is probably not the healthiest of diets.

Cleanses

Detox and cleansing diets have been all the rage in Hollywood for years. These diets promise rapid weight loss by consuming some sort of liquid concoction for a specific amount of time. The problem with these liquid diets is that researchers have found that habitual cleansing can lead to eating disorders as well as cause weight gain. The lack of nutrients from this form of dieting makes the body use muscle mass for energy which lowers metabolism.

Whether you are looking to lose a significant amount of weight or just a couple pounds, a diet fad is certainly not the way to go. A healthy diet paired with regular exercise has always proven to be the best way to lose weight.

  1. We have all heard the facts . . . to lose weight, you have to eat less and move more. But this is often easier said than done
